Earth Day Journal and Bottle Top Mural
at John Poole Middle School!
Jessica Mense, 6th grader and sister to Don't Drop the Top founder, Sophia Mense, has been involved with Don't Drop the Top since the beginning. She went on the family trip with Sophia that sparked the project. She collected tops from the various collection points in Poolesville. She washed, counted and sorted tops. She helped trace and paint the Poolesville Elementary School mural. She was a helper at the Don't Drop the Top club that assembled the mural. If you look closely on the PES mural page of this website, you'll see her photo several times.
Jessica was inspired to spread the "Don't Drop the Top" message to John Poole Middle School (JPMS) in Poolesville, MD for her Girl Scout Silver Award. There are two parts to her project. The first is an Earth Day Journal to be E-published on Earth Day. The second is a bottle top mural depicting the school's mascot, Timber, the Timberwolf.

Earth Day E-Publication
Mr. Robert Sinclair, JPMS Principal, posted Jessica's flyer announcing the Journal and inviting submissions on the JPMS website.
Jessica designed the format of the Earth Day Journal. She uploaded and edited the contributions she received from classes, teachers and students. Jessica wrote about the "Don't Drop the Top" movement highlighting the PES and JPMS bottle top murals. The journal was never published in the traditional way on paper in order to drive home the “green” aspect of the project. The link to the journal http://jpmsearthday.weebly.com/ was placed on the school’s website. There are no plans to take the journal off the internet, so it will continue to educate the online community about the importance of protecting the environment. Mr. Sinclair was so pleased with the journal that he wants it to be continued in the future.
Timberwolf Mural
Jessica followed the same process as the PES Don't Drop the Top mural. Using resources wisely, she used the wood, caps and screws left over from the PES Don't Drop the Top mural.
Next - Jessica painted the design on the boards following the outline she had made using the projector.
Jessica tied the two parts of her project together by placing a plaque next to the JPMS bottle cap mural. It has a quick response code. If you use the QR smartphone application, it will take you directly to mher journal article about the mural and the dangers of plastic pollution.
