Plastics in the Ocean Threaten People too!
Plastic is breaking down into smaller and smaller pieces. These particles are eaten by fish and retained within their digestive system, slowly releasing chemicals into their bodies.
Why is this all important? Other marine animals, birds, and mammals eat fish. So do humans.
According to the United Nations there is growing concern over the potential impact on human health of toxic substances released by plastic waste in the ocean. Scientists are studying whether contaminants linked to cancer, reproductive problems and other health risks can enter the food chain when ingested by marine animals.
